TRA, the Transport Research Arena, is the largest European research and technology conference on transport and mobility.
TRA is the foremost European transport event that covers all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. In 2022, TRA takes place in Lisbon, Portugal. Themed “Moving together – reimagining mobility worldwide”, TRA2022 brings together experts from around the world to discuss the newest innovations and future of mobility and transport, building also on the Portuguese historical legacy and links to overseas transport professionals. Through the development of innovative solutions, TRA Lisbon 2022 aims for a more efficient, safer, carbon-free, inclusive, and sustainable transport in all its modes.
Esrium Presentations at TRA
¨Road Condition Monitoring System for Vehicle Fleets¨ – the topic of the demo prepared by the ESRIUM team which was presented under the title: ¨Automated Road Condition Monitoring and Wear Map Creation¨:
15 November 2022 – presented by Matthias Rüther Director of Institute DIGITAL at JOANNEUM RESEARCH
16 November 2022 – presented by Rainer Schruth, Lead of Innovation Field – Sustainable Technologies at Virtual Vehicle
Scanning the road surface is a surveyor’s task or the task of highly specialized and cost-intensive sensing vehicles. Market companies are operating individual scanner vehicles and offering scanning services (see the business plan for these competitors).
One innovation of the sensor platform will be the availability of a scanning system, which can easily be integrated into the customer’s vehicle fleet and creates measurements with little additional operational costs compared to the normal vehicle fleet operation.
This way, data acquisition becomes cheaper, and the broad, multi-national deployment of sensor systems with equal quality becomes possible.
Matthias Rüther introduced ESRIUM at the TRA conference in Lisbon and answered questions about the function of the solution such as scanning the road surface with joanneum’s car. The TRA conference was an opportunity to diver deeper into the topic of the road wear map, to explain our know-how and receive feedback.
Esrium Demo at TRA
The demonstration area is one of the highlights of TRA 2022. The demonstration area enabled interactive showcases of state-of-the-art technology innovations for business partners, researchers, and industry stakeholders.
As part of the indoor demonstration at TRA 2022, the ESRIUM H2020 team formed by Vicent Pastor, from ENIDE, Dr Manfred Klopschitz and Gerald Lodron from JOANNEUM RESEARCH accompanied the demo process during the four-day conference, in which for the first time on the international circuit Esrium road wear mapping system is being presented.
During the conference, the members of the ESRIUM consortium presented the current progress and approach of the project to the conference participants. This was also a good opportunity to socialise and discuss the open points between the project partners. The exhibition of the JRD road wear sensor vehicle in the demonstration area of the conference was a real crowd magnet, which attracted a large audience. This was of course the best place to take our group photo.

Indeed, there were some important discussions about Esrium from interested parties from all over Europe all the way to Israel! Diverse opinions were noted in the area of C-ITS, maintenance plan, operator cost optimization, damage detection, and much more!

During the four-day conference, researcher Wolfgang Schildorfer from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria exchanged experiences and innovations of the ESRIUM project with colleagues and partners along with other EU projects at the FHO booth.
TRA 2022 was a huge success from the perspective of the shown interest in our research projects at our booth. The presentation loop of our international projects including ESRIUM was a kind of eye-catcher for all visitors when passing by. Based on that initial information we had several talks to interested parties – mainly in the ESRIUM concept and the status of the project. Furthermore, the C-ITS aspects were discussed sometimes and the necessity of EGNSS for the positioning issues were talked about. All in all, TRA 2022 gave us a very good opportunity to promote our ESRIUM project.
